Porsche Taycan: The Tesla Killer… Or Maybe Not

The much anticipated and very hyped new all-electric sports car from Porsche has finally arrived. The Taycan (pronounced TIE-CAN), created from the fabulous Mission E concept, boasts blistering performance figures as it is the best that the engineers at Porsche could come up with and really Volkswagen as a whole. The technology and platform that Porsche has developed is already being used used across all of Volkswagen's and their subsidiaries' top EV's like the recently released Audi E-tron. About $6.5 billion is being invested into this design, so this is a big deal in that it is laying the foundation for the future of performance electric vehicles.

So what does the new Taycan have to offer, and why is this such a big deal?

The word is performance

  • 0-60 in 2.8 seconds
  • 93.4 KWH Battery
  • Excellent handling due to lower mounted battery and lower seating position (this is a first for an electric vehicle)
  • 600+ HP and 600+ lbs.-ft. of instant torque
  • Charges 5% to 80% in 22.5 minutes

These figures are very impressive for supercar, let alone a four-door sedan. Porsche has also added some other fantastic traits that truly set the Taycan apart. First off, the build quality. This is something that Tesla has greatly struggled with since its inception in 2008. Tesla has been through major manufacturing issues and the a consequences show. $100k cars have been shipped that aren't even functional from the factory. Due to the fact that Tesla does not use a traditional dealer network, owners have had to wait months just for parts alone. This will not be the case with Porsche as they have in fact laid a proper foundation for there new infastructure. And, of course, there's the fact that Porsche is known quite well for the build quality of their cars.

Next up, the Taycan handles like a Porsche. That might not tell you much, but if you follow sports cars, you'll know that this is only the best comment one could give about the handling of a car. This is also something that Tesla cannot yet match, even with their top-of-the-line P100D. One of the biggest advantages the Taycan has is that Porsche shaped the battery to accommodate seats that were mounted closer to the ground. This greatly improves the feel of the car and helps give the driver greater confidence when taking it to the limits.

Third is the Porsche is designed to last. Not only is the fantastic cooling system working hard to ensure the Taycan can run as hard as possible around the track without degrading performance, but the better build and specially designed battery should last longer after more miles. When you "invest" in an electric car, a great amount of your money goes into that battery. As we all have experienced with cellphones, your battery will not last nearly as long after you've charged it 100 times as it does when new. Porsche has worked hard to help remove this problem with better materials and that fantastic cooling system.

Finally, the interior is much much better. One of the biggest ways Tesla has cut costs, and therefore quality, is in the interior. It's bland and dominated by a massive (but still kind of cool) touchscreen. Material choice is also mediocre and for the price and doesn't come close to its rivals. Porsche however is gunning for interior design of the year. It is simply fantastic with a blend of curved OLED displays and the highest quality materials.

However,

Despite the Taycan being a better sports car and by far a much better car in general, there is one factor that completely ruins this whole argument, and that's the price. The Taycan STARTS at $150k and if you want the performance model ,which is oddly named the Turbo, your looking at $180k. With options, it gets to well over $200k. A completely maxed out tesla P100D with Ludicrous Mode and every single option added is $100k. It is less than half the price and has very similar, if not better, performance in terms of 0-60 times and initial range. So you have to ask yourself, "The Porsche is a Tesla killer, but is it $100k better? I don't think so. The release of the Taycan will be a pivitol moment for electric cars and the future of sports cars as it represents the one of largest automaker's (Volkswagen's) debut into the industry. But that price is just too high. Knowing Porsche, they'll sell a ton of these things, and they already have. But for the price, it just won't be able to run Tesla out of out of the game.
